Pattern Wisely

Frequently, I’m asked by clients to interject more color or pattern into a space…I’m actually a fan of both, but as I always say, anything can be accomplished but each decision affects the next…It’s like putting a puzzle together…If you change the shape of one of the pieces, then you have to make sure that whatever piece you select fits into the puzzle!

This particular image from Elle Decor caught my attention…It’s the Master Bedroom of Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer’s East Hampton home, and I think several of the spaces reflect the use of pattern in a way that’s to be commended.

It’s obviously an example of really interjecting pattern into a space, but it’s also done in a very elegant and sophisticated manner.  The same pattern is used on the walls as it’s on the bedskirt.  What balances this powerful image and aesthetic out are the relatively neutral surroundings…the carpet, the bedding, the large mantle, the two occasional tufted chairs…even the shade on the floor lamp!  I love how the bedding and window treatments are also somewhat of a “mirror” image of each other…They create balance in the room and a sense of symmetry, which allows for a calmness to take over.

This is a lovely example of how pattern can be interjected and executed with a strong presence.  If this design aesthetic appeals to you, try it…just pattern wisely.
